Candidasa: Pantai Cantik Dan Tenang di Timur BaliCandidasa: The Tranquil Beauty of East Bali

Pantai Candidasa, Bali

When Bali was first discovered by mainstream tourism in 1970s, Candidasa quickly bloomed from a quiet fishing village into the newest sensation in Bali. White sandy beach fringed with coconut palms stretched along invitingly for those who look for sun, sea and sand. In spite of its laidback ambience, Candidasa once thrived with the life and action of a popular tourist town.

Today, Candidasa is better known as a more laidback beach alternative where visitors can spend some quiet time and experience the unspoiled Balinese way of life. It is also an excellent spot as a base to explore the interior of East Bali and visit places such as the black sand beach in Pantai Labuan Amok, the exceptional white strip of sand at Pasir Putih, and the Bali Aga village at Tenganan, an isolated community who are well regarded for their strict tradition and fine handicrafts.

As we drove along the road towards Candidasa, we noticed that part of the beach has disappeared and only rock jetties remain. The mining of coral reefs two decades ago has caused the water to erode the beach. But don’t let that kill your buzz yet. The deep blue water and picturesque scene are still very well preserved and it slowly unveiled itself before our eyes as we got closer to my destination.

The first thing to do when we reached Candidasa was to look for a decent restaurant to rest and grab my meal. After eyeing a few promising restaurant, we settled on a beachfront restaurant called Le-Zat. This charming restaurant has a bamboo gate and several blackboards showing their “Today’s Specials”. It was a right decision. The place was comfortable and has a great view towards the ocean. The food was fantastic, the staff was attentive, and occasionally, they will show cultural performance for their guests!

After a proper meal, we were ready to continue on our journey searching for the beautiful virgin beach of Pasir Putih. While most of the beaches in town are washed away, Pasir Putih remains an isolated and pristine white sandy beach only 20 minute north from Candidasa.

As this is our first time being to Pasir Putih, it took us a little longer to get the proper direction. We had to stop and get directions from the locals and the road to Pasir Putih was rather bumpy and challenging. Our car had to pass through woods and bushes, going up and down some rocky passes, before we finally caught a glimpse of blue water and white sand in front of us.

The reality is better than our imagination. Pasir Putih is a secluded and serene white sandy beach, with soft breeze and sunlight glistening on its blue water. There are only a small number of sun-loungers who have made the effort in finding this tiny haven.

We rented our own sun-lounger and ordered young coconuts, then blissfully enjoyed our day in the tranquility that the beach so generously offers. The water was perfect for swimming and the waves weren’t too big on that day. Additionally, Candidasa is situated at the center of all the famous dive sites of Bali, so there are a few places that offer snorkeling tours to nearby islands. Sun, sea and sand, Pasir Putih is indeed one of east Bali’s best-kept secret!
